PARENT Coach Training Materials

WELCOME

This is a set of carefully curated training materials that can be used for training Community Health Workers to be a part of team-based care for early childhood WCC.

These materials are best used when part of a training program that provides opportunities for virtual or in-person sessions with a trainer to discuss each Chapter in the training after its completion.

Training Framework

In addition to these Training materials, don’t forget to make opportunities for:

  • Discussion sessions with a trainer

  • In-clinic visit observations of WCC visits

  • Meetings with each clinic WCC team member

  • Site visit to community resources

  • Mock visits to practice each lesson

  • Observed visits once the Community Health Worker (CHW)/Coach is in the clinic

  • Practice with the Electronic Health Record (don’t forget to create the CHW/Coach’s template)

  • Weekly debriefing opportunities for the CHW/Coach

Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness

Provides training resources to build Motivational Interviewing skills in order to enhance conversations with families and Mindfulness resources for healthcare workers to prioritize their own health and bring their best selves when working with families.

Racism, Bias, and Health Equity in Well-Child Care

Provides resources that will aid in increasing knowledge about ways to promote equity in Well-Childcare (WCC) visits and how to mitigate the negative impacts of racism, bias, and discrimination on the delivery of care.

Trauma-Informed Care

Provides training resources to enhance knowledge on how trauma impacts families and learn strategies to best support them using a trauma-informed approach.

Screenings during Early Childhood

Provides resources to increase familiarity with common screenings utilized in WCC Visits during Early Childhood.

Infant Behavior and Developmental Milestones

Provides training resources to identify early childhood developmental milestones and how to promote an engaging learning environment to reach those milestones.

American Academy of Pediatrics: Bright Futures

Provides extensive training resources to help guide you through the Bright Futures Guidelines for well-child care visits, including anticipatory guidance topics.

Sleep Safety and Sleep Routines

Provides training resources to learn about safe sleeping practices for young children including guidance related to bed-sharing harm reduction, SIDS prevention, and sleep schedules.

Feeding and Nutrition

Provides training resources to learn common feeding guidance and best practices to keep an infant safe when feeding.

Illness Management

Provides several training resources that gives guidance on illness prevention and what to do in the event that the child is sick.

Education and Guidance for Families

This section contains a variety of parent-facing articles that you should review and be familiar with so that you can provide guidance to families on these topics, ranging from car seat safety to language promotion. Many links allow you to toggle to additional languages.
